ChatGPT Ads and Sponsored Agents: What Businesses Need to Know

OpenAI is testing Sponsored Agents and adding AI campaign tools, HubSpot, and Shopify integrations to ChatGPT Ads. See what businesses should verify.

OpenAI introduced Sponsored Agents and a broader set of ChatGPT Ads tools on September 16, 2026. The update adds conversational ad experiences, natural-language campaign management, AI-assisted creative tools, and integrations with HubSpot and Shopify.

For businesses, the important change is that an ad can now lead to a clearly labelled, business-sponsored conversation rather than only a landing page. That creates a new place for customers to explore a product or service, but it also raises practical questions about disclosure, data access, answer quality, brand control, conversion tracking, and human follow-up.

Source note: This article reflects OpenAI’s official announcement available on September 17, 2026. Sponsored Agents are being tested with selected US advertisers, and other features have eligibility and regional limits. The rollout, pricing, policies, integrations, and product behaviour may change. The testing and governance recommendations below are independent implementation guidance.

ChatGPT Ads changes at a glance

Update What OpenAI announced What a business should verify
Sponsored Agents A user can choose to begin a sponsored conversation after clicking an ad Disclosure, approved knowledge, escalation, and conversion path
Ads Manager plugin Create, update, and analyze campaigns through natural-language prompts Permissions, review gates, change logs, and budget controls
AI creative tools Suggested ad copy and imagery based on a landing page and campaign goal Accuracy, rights, brand standards, and policy compliance
Text customization Optional contextual adaptation and translation of existing ad copy Meaning preservation, localization quality, and approval
HubSpot integration Create ads, track performance, and follow up on leads with HubSpot context CRM field scope, consent, attribution, and ownership
Shopify app Create and manage campaigns using Shopify catalogue data Product accuracy, inventory, markets, margins, and fulfilment

The features support different stages of the advertising workflow. They should not be treated as one automatic growth system. A useful deployment still requires a defined audience, reliable product information, an approved offer, controlled spending, accurate measurement, and a person accountable for the result.

What are Sponsored Agents in ChatGPT?

Sponsored Agents are business-sponsored conversations that users can choose to open after seeing and clicking an eligible ChatGPT ad. OpenAI says the experience is clearly labelled and separate from both ChatGPT’s independent answers and the user’s original conversation.

The format is intended to help a prospective customer ask follow-up questions before leaving ChatGPT. Someone considering a dining table, for example, may want to check its dimensions, seating capacity, materials, care requirements, delivery options, or return policy. A sponsored agent can provide that guided product exploration and link to the advertiser’s website when the user is ready.

OpenAI is currently testing Sponsored Agents with selected advertisers in the United States. That means the feature should be described as a limited test, not a universally available advertising format.

Why conversational ads are different from ordinary ads

An ordinary ad usually carries a fixed message and sends the user to a fixed destination. A sponsored agent can respond to many questions, adapt the explanation, and surface different information during one interaction.

That flexibility can reduce friction for complicated products and services. It also creates more room for inconsistency. A business needs to know which approved sources the agent uses, what it must never claim, how it handles an unknown answer, when it sends a user to a person, and how the conversation connects to a purchase or lead without hiding the sponsored relationship.

Before testing, define:

  1. the products, services, markets, and claims the agent may discuss;
  2. the approved catalogue, policy, pricing, and support sources;
  3. prohibited claims and regulated topics;
  4. the conditions for escalating to a human;
  5. how consent and lead capture work;
  6. how a completed outcome is attributed and verified;
  7. how inaccurate answers are reported and corrected.

What the Ads Manager plugin can do

OpenAI says advertisers can use natural-language prompts in ChatGPT to create, update, and analyze campaigns through the Ads Manager plugin. A user can turn a website or campaign brief into a draft, examine performance, and ask for recommendations.

Natural-language campaign operations can make advertising more accessible and reduce repetitive setup work. They should not remove approval boundaries. Reading performance is different from changing creative, audience, bid strategy, budget, or campaign status.

A safe operating model separates those authorities:

  • analysts may inspect results and generate recommendations;
  • marketers may draft campaigns and creative;
  • an authorized owner reviews targeting, claims, budget, and destination;
  • consequential changes require confirmation before they are applied;
  • the team verifies the final state in Ads Manager after every change.

The last step matters because a tool accepting a request is not proof that the correct campaign, audience, budget, or creative is live.

How AI-assisted ad creative works

OpenAI is also adding creative assistance inside Ads Manager. It can suggest copy and imagery based on an advertiser’s landing page and campaign objective. The advertiser can review and edit those suggestions before deciding whether to use them.

The company also announced optional AI-powered text customization. When enabled, it can adapt existing headlines and descriptions to the context of a conversation and translate the ad copy into a user’s preferred language.

Businesses should treat both features as drafting systems. Verify product details, promotional terms, dates, prices, regulated claims, comparative claims, trademarks, image rights, tone, and localization before publication. A fluent variation can still change the meaning of an offer or imply a promise the landing page does not support.

What the Shopify and HubSpot integrations change

OpenAI named Shopify and HubSpot as its first ecommerce and CRM partners for ChatGPT Ads.

US-based Shopify merchants can use the ChatGPT Ads app to create and manage campaigns. OpenAI says Shopify catalogue integration allows merchants to begin with their existing products and track performance. The company announced international availability in markets where ChatGPT Ads operates beginning September 23, subject to eligibility.

HubSpot customers can connect a ChatGPT Ads account, create ads, track performance, and follow up on leads using their HubSpot context. The practical value is a shorter path between campaign activity and customer operations. The practical risk is allowing more customer or campaign data into a workflow than the task requires.

Use least-privilege access. Limit the connected account and fields, document the data flow, preserve consent and retention rules, and test attribution before using the integration for executive reporting or automated follow-up.

A responsible ChatGPT Ads pilot

The first pilot should answer one business question, not attempt to automate the entire advertising operation.

1. Choose one offer and audience

Select a product or service with accurate public information, a clear conversion action, and enough demand to measure. Avoid mixing several offers in the first test.

2. Establish a comparison baseline

Record the existing channel’s spend, qualified leads or purchases, conversion rate, acquisition cost, review effort, and follow-up time. Without a baseline, a new channel can look active without proving value.

3. Cap spend and authority

Use a fixed pilot budget. Keep AI-generated changes in draft or approval mode until a named owner reviews them. Do not give a conversational workflow unrestricted authority to raise budgets or publish campaigns.

4. Test the conversation boundary

Ask expected, ambiguous, hostile, and out-of-scope questions. Check whether the sponsored agent preserves disclosure, uses approved facts, refuses unsupported claims, and transfers the user to the correct human or page.

5. Verify the completed outcome

Confirm that a qualified lead, booked call, or purchase reaches the intended system with reliable attribution. Count accepted business outcomes, not conversations or generated creative alone.

6. Review total cost and risk

Include media, creative review, integration, monitoring, correction, customer support, and privacy work. Expand only when the complete result compares favourably with the alternative.

Are Sponsored Agents part of the user's original ChatGPT conversation?

No. OpenAI says the sponsored conversation is distinct from ChatGPT's independent answers and separate from the original conversation the user started. Businesses should still make sponsorship, data use, and handoff boundaries clear.

What can advertisers do with the ChatGPT Ads Manager plugin?

OpenAI says advertisers can use natural-language prompts to create, update, and analyze campaigns, turn a website or brief into a campaign, review performance, and receive recommendations. Advertisers remain responsible for reviewing suggestions before publishing changes.
