OpenClaw 2026.9.7 gives operators a new choice: run selected conversations through OpenAI’s hosted Agents API, while keeping OpenClaw as the interface and tool layer. It also improves update protection and recovery, fixes problems affecting some upgrades from 2026.9.5, and adds a separate beta ChatGPT sign-in option for eligible accounts.
The hosted option is meaningful, but it is not a drop-in replacement for every self-hosted workflow. The storage, credential, and tool-policy boundaries deserve a deliberate review before enabling it.
What changed in 2026.9.7
The official 2026.9.7 release notes describe smoother operation under load and in long conversations, stronger update backup and rollback behavior, and improvements to Mac, iPhone, and iPad chat. The release also helps work resume after a restart.
The headline developer addition is an optional Agents API runtime. An explicitly selected conversation can use a persistent hosted Linux workspace with web search and OpenClaw tools. File transfers are supported on the documented Linux storage paths. You need an OpenAI API key with access to the model you select; a ChatGPT subscription alone is not the stated credential for this hosted runtime.
OpenClaw also documents a self-hosted execution option, but that requires your own controller and a matching workspace path and does not support the same file-transfer capability. See the Agents API integration guide before choosing a mode.
The operational boundaries matter
OpenClaw says to use the hosted runtime only with a single-user Gateway, with OpenClaw as the session’s sole controller. After changing instructions, tools, model, credentials, or execution environment, start a new chat or reset the current one so the hosted session uses the new configuration.
There is also a retention distinction: deleting or resetting the local chat does not delete its hosted history or files. Operators should map where data lives, check how it is removed, and confirm that returned attachments actually arrived. If your workflow depends on per-turn tool restrictions from prompt hooks, strict restrictions on native shell/file/web access, or tool-free background calls, the release notes recommend choosing another runtime.
These are practical design constraints, not reasons to avoid the feature altogether. A sensible pilot uses a non-sensitive task, one named owner, explicit API credentials, a data-retention review, and tests for tool permissions and file handling before production use.
ChatGPT sign-in is a separate beta path
The release also introduces Sign in with ChatGPT (Beta) for eligible accounts. It requires registration and consent to share tokens, and it does not cover every model or media tool. OpenClaw says it cannot display that account’s quota or set per-app limits. The OpenAI authentication guide distinguishes Codex login, ChatGPT beta sign-in, and API keys; do not treat those methods as interchangeable.
How to approach the upgrade
Before updating a production Gateway, back up configuration and state, record the running version, and read the version-specific release notes and update guidance. Pay particular attention if your installation came from 2026.9.5 or 2026.9.6, because the release includes recovery work for those upgrade paths. Test sign-in, model access, tools, attachments, and a restart on a limited installation before rolling out broadly.
For teams connecting this to their own systems, I can help with OpenClaw setup and integration, including credential separation, tool boundaries, deployment, and recovery checks. You can also see my agent setup work for the sort of integration planning involved.

The feature descriptions above come from OpenClaw’s documentation. The staged pilot and rollout checks are my operational recommendation, not a claim that every deployment needs the same configuration.
Frequently asked questions
What is new in OpenClaw 2026.9.7?
The release adds an optional OpenAI Agents API runtime, beta ChatGPT sign-in for eligible accounts, and improvements to upgrade recovery, performance, and native chat.
Does the hosted Agents API work with my ChatGPT subscription?
The documented hosted Agents API runtime requires an OpenAI API key with access to the selected model. ChatGPT beta sign-in is a separate connection option with different coverage and limits.
Can I use hosted Agents API sessions with multiple OpenClaw users?
OpenClaw's release notes say this runtime is for a single-user Gateway with OpenClaw as the sole session controller.
Does deleting a local chat erase its hosted files?
No. The release notes warn that resetting or deleting a local chat does not delete hosted session history or files.
Should I upgrade immediately from 2026.9.5 or 2026.9.6?
Review the official update and rollback guidance, back up state, and check the release's version-specific recovery notes before upgrading production installations.
